Design and development
The Curtiss XBTC-1 (Model 96) was a low-wing monoplane with retractable tailwheel landing gear which used a 3,000 hp (2,238 kW) Pratt & Whitney R4360-14 Wasp Major radial engine. It was entered in a 1943 United States Navy competition against the Douglas XBT2D-1 Destroyer II, Martin XBTM-1 Mauler, and Kaiser-Fleetwings XBTK-1. Before it first flew, a slightly different version of the R-4360 engine was installed, with the revised designation XBTC-2. Despite its power and "first-class performance and weapon-carrying capacity",[1] it lost to the XBTD-1 (as the redesignated AD-1 Skyraider) and the BTM-1 (now AM-1) Mauler, which were already building.
The XBT2C-1 (Model 98), produced in March 1945, used a smaller Wright R-3350-24 radial engine and reduced armament to allow two seats and the fitting of radar, which was carried in a pod under the starboard wing. Nine of ten projected aircraft were built. They were Curtiss' last type for the U.S. Navy.
