This is one of the Terminal pages. We use them to discuss the technical issues, policies, and operations of Plane Spotting World. The Terminal is divided into sections covering these different aspects, but if you can't decide which to use, try Left Luggage. You can see all station cafe sections at once here. {{Documentation/docname}} seems not to work

And it's beyond me! All I did was drag a load of WP templates over. Hmmmm. Tim Trent 12:17, 17 January 2008 (UTC)

How do you mean it doesn't work? I looked at the WP version AND reimported it, and they look identical. BG7 15:34, 17 January 2008 (UTC)
Well, I imported {{Documentation}} and the docname thing was part of the chain. I suppose it could be cache, but the documemntation about documentation was not transcluding. I bet it is stuck in the job queue!
And I just checked. All works now. So I blame the job queue. Designed by a madman!
Tim Trent 16:10, 17 January 2008 (UTC)
Here, here! Since you posted on CraigTC (talk · contribs)'s talk page about it, i've been trying to visit lots of pages making minimal edits to clear it!
BG7 16:15, 17 January 2008 (UTC)
It clears in the end. It's just a pain! I placed a comment on the mediawiki talk page about it. Of course no-one actually cares because MW was designed by the terminally bewildered insofar as design was concerned. Allegedly. Tim Trent 16:19, 17 January 2008 (UTC)
Ah well - at least we now have some users (even if they do make that GFS job queue longer! (lol! :p) BG7 16:27, 17 January 2008 (UTC)

Server issues

We have an issue with our server which will be solved within 2 weeks. We apologise for oddities of service. Tim Trent 11:13, 23 May 2008 (UTC)

Any luck with this? Looks like a lot of recent edits were lost. -Finlaycj 23:19, 6 June 2008 (UTC)
I'm more than a little perturbed that edits were lost. The wiki software is designed not to lose a thing and we have not reverted to any backups. We are migrating currently. Tim Trent 22:43, 7 June 2008 (UTC)
Migration is complete. Not sure about the data loss you report. Can you be more specific, please? Tim Trent 23:33, 7 June 2008 (UTC)
  • The Recent changes only show for May 22 until now. Probably not a real problem, just seems odd. -Finlaycj 20:55, 9 June 2008 (UTC)
Bernd and I have stared at this at length and it makes no sense at all to us. But it IS MediaWiki software! Special:Logs is the most help and is not a lot of help. What we know for sure is that PostgreSQL kept the database intact even if there were problems, and we know that it reported no problems to our monitors.
We don't, unfortunately, have the syslogs form the old server (glad that is now history) so we can't tell at a deeper level iof anything went astray, but we just know it is intact.
We suspect that the old server failed to allow the editing transactions to "commit", thus aggravating you and us, but not ruining database integrity. Luckily that is now in the past.
Tim Trent 17:04, 17 June 2008 (UTC)
this diff shows that there appears to be no problem. Tim Trent 00:35, 18 June 2008 (UTC)

Positive changes

We are on a new server

We outgrew the previous one. Weird limits made our position there suddenly untenable. We know they annoyed our users, too. But that is history. Tim Trent 17:11, 17 June 2008 (UTC)

Logged in users no longer see adverts

We have found out how to suppress them for you when you are logged in. If you woudl like to see the adverts please log out and browse in that mode. Tim Trent 17:11, 17 June 2008 (UTC)

As you know the adverts support the server expenses, and we depend on them for our day to day running costs. But regular users "tune them out" and there is no point in even bothering to display them. The folks who click adverts are the casual users, not the core team. Tim Trent 17:11, 17 June 2008 (UTC)

We've moved the advert placement to unclutter the right hand margn and to make the adverts more attractive for the casual surfer to click. We have a substantially more costly (and powerful) server, and we need to offset the expenses somehow. We view this as non intrusive and attractive. Advert placement may move during the next few weeks as we test results. Tim Trent 17:11, 17 June 2008 (UTC)

Server environment

We have now migrated all SpottingWorld to a substantially faster web environment on the new server.

This ought to make life even easier.

A380 production list

This is just to thank everybody for their contributions and tidying up the list. This list looks great at the moment and very up to date. Joe Fourie 22/02/2009
