User talk:Bluegoblin7

From PlaneSpottingWorld, for aviation fans everywhere

Bluegoblin7, welcome to Plane Spotting World

If this is the first time you've used a wiki you may have a few questions. Most of the answers are obvious. To learn to edit, why not just dive in? At the foot of the editing window there is a help link. This opens in a new window and gives you a good overview of wiki syntax and stuff.

There are very few rules here. The best summary is:

  • Respect other people's Copyright
  • Behave to others as you would like them to behave to you
  • Do no harm

This is not an encyclopaedia. Pages here do not need to comply with encyclopaedic notions or citations or neutrality. Just dive in and start.

It's always worth having a look at Control tower every so often, too.

One of the first things you might want to do is to place {{talktome}} at the top of your talk page (this page) above this welcome message. Taking heed of what it says will make it much easier for you to follow discussions on talk pages.

And while you browse the site, and especially when you've created something truly worthwhile, why not Digg and also tag on del.icio.us – the tools are in the left hand menu. The more Diggs (etc) we have the better, because Diggs and del.icio.us links add to our findability. The best way to find out about them is to click on the tool. Each is different and each gives you the chance to "rate" any article here. Or anywhere else come to that!

"Snap", the little link preview window, has options in it that you can tailor to meet your needs. If you like it, stay with the defaults. If not then you can turn it off easily

Best yet you have a Spotting World Blog if you want it. Have a look at your User page. There is a link to let you create your blog. This is part of what Spotting World does for you. Or just go to blogs.spottingworld.com. You can use your blog for any lawful purpose. It's yours to do with as you like. Anyone can read your blog once you create it, but only you can write to it.

There is also a live chat room - see the left hand menu

Any questions, please ask any user on their talk page.

And please tell all your friends about us

Template problems

Let's do the ones that don't work gently. Copy one across, see what doesn't work, show me what you need and we can work on it together. :) Remind me on TSW to come here and have a look! Tim Trent 19:18, 11 November 2007 (UTC)

interwikiness

This part you absolutely have to understand before touching things. If you do, then great! We had huge problems when we set the wikis up and undoing changes was ineffective! Tim Trent 17:14, 8 January 2008 (UTC)

Ok Tim no problem... I'm looking into getting a Linux PC and getting my own MediaWiki wiki, so i'll be able to test changes, and bots(!), there first.
Thanks,
BG7 17:23, 8 January 2008 (UTC)
PS, that's something my dad WILL let me do - ive persuaded him it'll be beneficial for his business website as it will be a very reliable server, rather than a web based one! (And it has the addded bonus of being connected all the time - meaning I can run bots off it!)

Aviationists

Just a thought.. Maybe you should invite JGHowes over on WP. He's a pilot Might be an asset here. --DP67 09:04, 9 January 2008 (UTC)

Ok ill drop him a line... --BG7 20:59, 9 January 2008 (UTC)

Interwiki links

BG, is there a way to link from an article on PSW to one on TSW without using http code? Thanks. - CraigTC 04:13, 17 January 2008 (UTC)

Hi Craig, theres swtrain: for TSW, sworld: for SpottingWorld, and swplane: for here.
Thanks

British Airways Flight BA38

BG, I've got Template:Infobox Airliner accident up and running, and it seems to be functioning correctly. This will get the infobox in the British Airways Flight BA38 page you set up working. We probably need to try to acquire a good free-use photo of the accident too. - CraigTC 19:15, 17 January 2008 (UTC)

Ok, thanks. As it's current, the WP version is still getting edits (i've watchlisted it) and it's also been proposed for deletion. So i'll bring over newer versions every now and then until frequent editing calms down.
Also, could a kind soul create a link to it from the News Archive, and add it to the news section on the main page?
Thanks,
BG7 19:52, 17 January 2008 (UTC)

(Edit conflict) Two things:

  • What are the specifics in Also, could a kind soul create a link to it from the News Archive, and add it to the news section on the main page? Whose news archive, and whose Main page - WP or PSW/SW? Either way, I don't know how to do that yet, or I would try. - CraigTC 20:39, 17 January 2008 (UTC)
  • On the naming of the flight, "BA38" or "BA038", BA's website uses BA38, so I think we ought to stick with that one. I've set up a redirect at [[British Airways Flight BA038 just in case that is searched for. - CraigTC 20:39, 17 January 2008 (UTC)
I've also uploaded a free use image from WP that was in the WP one. It might dissapear though as I want permission to use images, even if they are Free Use, AND SW can't afford to get involved in legal stuff - wed go offline permananlty!
Thanks,
BG7 20:08, 17 January 2008 (UTC)
Since this is an event which happened today, can we write this article ourselves from source which is exactly what they do at WP. We can't keep copying over or we won't get any unique content. Thanks. Tbo 157 20:27, 17 January 2008 (UTC)
Yes we can do - or at least, other users can. I'm way to busy at the moment, and I've got the flu, and it's my birthday, so i get to delegate it on, and I choose YOU!!! (only joking m8!)
CraigTC might get on with the job if you ask nicely.
Thanks,
BG7 20:36, 17 January 2008 (UTC)
If someone wants to keep up with the news, and do it, then that is the best way. Keep in mind that on WP, they have lots of people editing that pge, and we have, what, 3!? Each of us has other things we're working on, so as much as we'd like original content, copying might be the best way to do it right now. One option is to keep an eye on the discussion page, and cover legitimate items on the story that WP can't cover (tho nothing comes to mind yet). Also, as soon as the story dies down (a few days), we can rewrite the text, using some original sources also, so that the page is different that WP's. - CraigTC 20:39, 17 January 2008 (UTC)

Linkishness

Howdy, BG. A couple of Q. Can I XT link back to WP? And have you thought of importing support for the WP templates? I just put up the VB-6 Felix page & the infobox doesn't respond. Also, I'd suggest adapting the stub templates & some kind of category system, =WP. (BTW, if you've got guidelines for inclusion, where can I read them? No need to create pp that're just gonna get del.) Finally, I'm seeing images imported to my userpage aren't coming up; how can I fix it? Or can I? Oh, & is there an option on the skin? (I personally prefer WP's Cologne Blue.) Thanx. Ghostrider2 (aka Trekphiler) 21:40 & 21:43, 29 January 2008 (UTC)

I know im not BG but Ill answer since hes away. Alot of templates do still need to be imported from WP. We have looked into bots and they may be used soon. Ask User:Tim Trent for more details. A category system will be adopted in due course. Our sister site, TSW recently adopted one. Regarding guidelines, the main ones are currently being discussed at our sister site, swtrain:. We try to simplify our processes from WP and so we try to keep guidelines and policies to a minimum and let common sense rule. Written guidelines will soon be put on to the parent site sworld:. Thanks. Tbo 157 21:55, 29 January 2008 (UTC)
Hmmm... Tbo seems to have covered most of it! (Cheers!)
I will have a look into getting other skins over. But it may be that our server cannot hold them - we struggle to keep 3 wikis going sometimes!
Feel free to implement anything you want anywhere!
XT? You mean link wp:? We have a long job queue too, so that may be part of the infobox problem! I'll have a look at your UP too.
Cheers,
BG7 18:16, 30 January 2008 (UTC)
Hmmm... it seems that the images aren't online here! I'll upload them in a bit... BG7 18:17, 30 January 2008 (UTC)
Just wondering if anybody objects to linking to other WPs when importing pages. EZ enuf to do, if nobody objects. Ghostrider2 22:22, 1 February 2008 (UTC) (P.S. A mop?)

Wikitalk

Add "from WP" to talk pages? I wish you'd told me sooner... =D Ghostrider2 22:43, 31 January 2008 (UTC)

I'll double back when I can. Q, tho: shouldn't the tag go on the main page? That's where the import goes, N the talk page. So anybody seeing the page knows it's sourced. Ghostrider2 22:24, 1 February 2008 (UTC)
With that in mind, I'm adding them on the main page. Ghostrider2 01:28, 4 February 2008 (UTC)
Maybe we're crosstalking. I've been putting the "WP import" tag at bottom of the pages I import, rather than the talk pages, so people see that's where it came from (in case there's any question). I like the "wikify" template; I confess I'm not sure it's needed, but I'm familiar with the process, so I'm not unbiased. Ghostrider2 16:31, 27 February 2008 (UTC)
Ok. I will adopt the wikify template in due course, mentioning the GFDL aswell. It'll probably just say what the current one says though!
If we adopt putting them on the main article page, then that's ok. I will start cleaning up previous articles that already have them.
Finally, what do you think of an assessment scheme, like the one at Trains? I still need to write the guidlines for that!
Thanks,
BG7 11:24, 28 February 2008 (UTC)

Admin?

You did ask, & I'm flattered, but I'm too tempted to ban vandals at the slightest provocation. Better get somebody a little less cranky. Unless you're desperately short... =D Ghostrider2 01:28, 4 February 2008 (UTC)

Logo?

I'm wondering if there's a copy of the logo I can paste into a userbox. I've got WP boxes for articles create specially here, & I'd like to mark them with the PSW logo. You can message me here]. Thankx. Ghostrider2 22:00, 1 April 2008 (UTC)
