Summary
The Alps provide a challenge to glider pilots. The slopes facing the sun produce strong thermals which rise high above the mountains. The thermic activity also draws in air from the valley and this creates a wind that blows up the slopes reinforcing the thermal lift. The Alps also pose dangers. Even though there is powerful lift to great heights, there can also be powerful sink, sometimes along the length of a valley. In some areas the valleys have few places that are suitable for landing, and so the pilots must stay in range of known fields and airfields. The popularity of the Alps also means that there is a risk of collision with gliders who are also following similar routes or flying in the opposite direction.
