A37 Cessna firing rockets

Photographer

Jack A. Swayze, who was lead industrial photographer working for Cessna Aircraft in Wichita, Kansas, took this picture.

Copyright

This photograph is copyrighted by Cessna Aircraft, and is used by permission.

Description

The picture was taken at a test site in Kansas, which is located near Salina. It shows the unguided rockets being fired from the A37 just milliseconds after the pilot hit the trigger to fire them. No automation was used to time the shot. The photographer was able to achieve getting the jet, and the rockets, all in frame by watching for a tell-tale "puff of smoke" that would appear at the back of the weapons rack just moments before the rockets would fire.

Graphic preparation

This J-peg was created from an original negative which was in the possession of the photographer at the time of his death on May 23, 2001.
