An AV-8B Harrier II+, assigned to the “Bulldogs” of Marine Attack Squadron Two Two Three (VMA-223), prepares for landing on the flight deck aboard the amphibious assault ship USS Nassau (LHA 4). The AV-8B is a high performance, single-engine, single-seat, Vertical/Short Take-off and Landing (V/STOL) attack aircraft. The AV-8B Harrier II+ is capable of night and adverse weather operations due to the addition of the AN/APG-65 multi-mode radar. The fusion of night and radar capabilities allows the Harrier to be responsive to the Marine Air-Ground Task Force's needs for expeditionary, night and adverse weather, offensive air support. Nassau's Air Department practiced handling the Harriers for the phase three landing qualification during a two-week underway period.
